My Amen Savior CB750

Damn! That's crazy! Can you find any cheap bench grinders that you could put buffing wheels on?

I've looked in to that option, but then I'll need to lengthen the shafts on the bench grinder to get the wheel far enough away from the grinder it self.. And make that safe. A lot of tinkering to get that set up straight.
For now I just use my drill.
If I start a third build I might have to get some more and serious gear in my shop. Aaaaaand a bigger shop. Sigh.

The hubs look nice. Are spokes for the 750's readily available? I'm leary of taking my wheels down because the only way I can get new spokes is to have them custom made. I need to do something as the spokes are rusty. I think stainless spokes with black wheels and hubs would look great. I may buy another set of wheels on Fleabay so I can run a set while I'm working on the other.

Do you re-spoke your own wheels?

Nope, I don't re-spoke them myself. Not yet anyways. These two wheels I'll be having done at a local shop where I live. Only thing is it costs like $160 a wheel here to have 'em laced and trued. That sucks so hard.. Only reason I'm not doing it myself is that the season is around the corner and I'm working my ass off to get this puppy going before that.

I'll probably try and learn once I get to switch out the wheels on my other bike to spoked ones. But that's for next winter.

Spokes for almost any motorcycle can be had from Buchanans for about $100 a wheel.

Thanks for the tip on the spokes. I'll give them a look. Now I just need to find someone to install them. I'm sure Buchanans will do it for a moderate fee. I'm tempted to try it myself, I've indicated in many a four jaw chuck but it's not just truing the wheel, the offset of the hubs and spoke tension comes into play also. A lot going on.

I may end up taping off the rims and hubs and painting with Rusteoleum for now.

I found a pretty good article awhile back on spoking wheels. This seems to give a pretty good explanation of the process.

I think Buchanan's will lace and true up a wheel for about another $100 per wheel. That shit really adds up! I've never lace up a motorcycle wheel but have done a few bicycle wheels. I have some 23" rims I'm planning to use on an XS650 or SR500 project and will try lacing them myself. I have a wheel balancer and can use my dial indicator on that to true them up. I almost bought a spoke nipple torque wrench, but talked to few guys about them and they said they weren't really necessary.

Using 23" on a XS650 or SR500? Now that sounds awesome!! You've got to show some pictures of that set up when you get 'er done!

Got my solo seat front mount made by my brother in law today. I had him turn, cut and weld it together while I was away on work these last two days.

Will do some welding this weekend if some of the snow is gone.

will be hooking this up something like this:

Like that'll happen anytime soon! haha.. I've had the rims and bikes for 3 years and haven't started yet. I still have an unfinished XS650 project from years ago. oh well.

Those solo seat mounts look nice. Why three different mounts though?

Tell me about it. To many projects... The story of my life.

About those mounts. The one on the right and on the second picture is going on my Amen Savior. As of the other two, the small one will work as the rear mount of the harley tank on my XS400. The bigger one will mount the front end of my solo seat on the XS400. Or if it was the other way around? Oh hell - it's in the middle of the night here, I'll figure it out tomorrow and post some pictures.

Cant wait to see how it all turns out .That gas cap is something else ! back in the 80,s buddy of mine had a similar bike .Said that cap style was called a de-nutter .nice work

Haha.. Well Mac, I'll try and keep my nuts in place and intact! Thanks for the kind words though.

Getting ready to weld my seat mounts in place. Just waiting for the frekkin' rain to stop..

And I did some more polishing. Using my brass wheel and scotch brite. Turned out ok I think..

Now I just have to paint the cylinders. The fins look like crap.

And switch all the pitted philips bolts to polished stainless allen bolts. Will be doing that when I tear the engine to replace a bad gasket.

Ok. Tacking my fittings in place weren't as easy as I thought it would be. Probably since I've only got an arc welder..

Nothing's ever as easy, is it? It always something. I'm sure all of you have been using these things for years, but my son gave me a couple of these magnets for Christmas. They are the handiest damn things for welding parts on frames....

Yeah, I know. To bad they don't make up for my lack of skill and my MMA arc welder.. I should really get a MIG instead.

I have a small MIG. I'm good with welding on tabs and it makes a pretty weld. Not sure I would tackle a hardtail with it though. I think I would pay a someone with a TIG to do that.
