Not getting cross hatching when cylinder honing

Hi guys, I just tried to hone my cylinders but I wasn't getting 45 degree cross hatching so I stopped. It looks flatter, closer to 120 degrees. Why is that? Am I not moving the hone in and out fast enough? Or is the drill spinning too fast?

Is this close enough just for the rings to seat? Is it possible to fix? Thanks.

Both. The drill MUST be able to go slow or you cannot use it and then speed up your in/out. The in/out is what sets up the degree. You are way too flat there. Can't say if you can recover it as no way to know how long you were at it but typically you do it QUICK and stop. You will NOT be removing 100% of the top ring step marking if you are doing a hone for new rings and have gone too far if trying to. With new rings all you are looking to do is scuff up 95% of the walls to force ring face erosion to then settle in, you are not looking to straighten or remove say dents or all ring wear at the very top. I don't spend nearly 30 seconds on each hole doing that, maybe 10-15 max. Don't use max tension on your adjuster either. I've even wrapped 400 sandpaper around the stones if they are too rough before to lower metal removal rate. And you MUST oil before every set of sweeps, flood it. Make a mess. Or you burnish the highs to then eat oil. I use 30% solvent and 70% oil roughly, the solvent carries the honing trash away faster to keep the metal grain clean.

Just watched a clock while faking the hand motion, 7 seconds to get 9-10 in and out passes and a stop and check, again one last time if needed.

Much better! Thanks AMC! I went with your pacing and it looks good to me..
