I once heard that sometimes on custom built bikes (mines a '79 750) that the rec/reg might not be properly grounded anymore. The post, which I now can't find, stated a way to run a wire from the rec/reg to the frame or battery neg terminal?... any idea on which wire this would be? Would or could I run a SECOND separate Green from the rec/reg directly to the battery or frame, bypassing the solenoid? ~Still struggling out here

I’m not yet up to the electricals on my 80 build but you should be able to simply check this with a multi meter. Check for good ground (as close to zero ohms as possible) between battery negative and the frame. Then check between reg body and frame for good ground. If no good (high resistance), then check and clean the mating surfaces. I’d be surprised if you don’t get a good ground. Worst case is to install a ground wire between reg and frame if you have to. Ie; link the body of the reg to the frame that’s all there is to it.

Yes to that. Grounding goes through no 'solenoid' on old bikes like that. Straight run from the grounding object to the frame. Which wire from the reg? Use NO wire unless it is green ONLY or you may set bike on fire.

thanks... pretty much understood on the green wires.

thanks fg1972... I just built a new elec box out of 16ga steel, solid mounts to the frame now (the old one was made from duct tin) Also bought a new rotor and stator from Rick's Motorcycle, expensive chit! I'm hoping this new metal box will be a better ground to the frame... time will tell 89976650_991517914583352_4802931519024791552_n.jpg 90005957_991517941250016_5030124392651161600_n.jpg 90037628_991517984583345_6536523771598077952_n.jpg

basically, i made a new electric box out of steel to make better contact to the frame, we'll see 90037628_991517984583345_6536523771598077952_n.jpg
