CB750 K5 Restoration

Just some fresh pictures, getting the Triangle sorted out. I almost have enough parts to make her a runner.

Just caught up on your thread. You have done some awesome work on the engine, it looks better then new. And that's a great write up on softening the rubber, great work i'm sure this bike will look great when done.:thumbsup::thumbsup:
 
Thanks, I'm putting a lot of extra time into the electronics. The wire harness is new, but most of the stuff that I'm plugging into to it isn't, so I'm taking my time cleaning everything up and replacing connecotrs as needed. Found this cool vid
 
Got a couple of hours in the shop last weekend. Replaced the base gasket, oil filter and bolt, oil hoses, then put some oil in her. Next put the whole intake, carb, and airbox together. That's a tight fit. Then mocked up my ignition coil mounting.

Next up, getting tha Pamco ignition installed and wired up.

The local Honda dealer.. I believe so. Just about every time I drop in there, I buy a couple of feet of fuel line. It's only a buck or two a foot.
 
I've been hunting for some locally but no love so far. The stuff from the auto parts store gets hard and crunchy after a few months of fuel going through it. I suspect its the ethanol.
 
I've been hitting the local places looking for some Tygon tube but haven't had any luck yet. Might just be DC order time again.
 
Now that it is super cold outside, going out to the shop requires some planning and time for the furnace to heat up the room enough to work. I got a day in last weekend and decided to get working on the forks.

One tube was almost completely dry, the other had some sludge that was fork oil at one time. I disassembled and cleaned all the parts.

I found one of the tubes in real bad shape with some heavy wear and pitting in the travel area.

So it looks like I'm in the market for some replacements. I see that www.z1parts.net has reproductions on sale for $129 + the trip. So if anyone out there reads this and has a good set for less, let me know.

I proceeded to polish the lowers.

I also started on polishing up the hubs, sorry no pictures.
 
Spent new years eve day in the shop polishing the hubs. Cleaning in between the ribs is a royal pain. Going to get new bearings and retainers later.

I think if I ever took one down that far, I glass bead the center of the hub and paint it silver like you did your engine. I'm not 100% sure they weren't just beaded to start with.

The casting is rough inside those ribs. One trick I use from time to time is Oven Cleaner, like Easy-Off. It will clean aluminum really good, but will leave a gray haze that you can get off with steal wool. I was reluctant to blast them because the front bearings appear to be in real good shape and I might keep them as is.
There is some rough casting on the rear brake holder that I left rough too. With polishing, you can spend hours at it and never get it perfect. Sometimes good enough is good enough.
 
Yep, I did the same thing on my rear brake housings. They are sand castings and polish very poorly. I like getting away with as little elbow grease as possible. Most of my polishing gets done on a large buffer with a little bit of pre buff sanding. I've had some pretty good results using purple power and cold water getting all the crud off parts lately but it still has a little bit of a haze like you mention too.

Sorry, no pictures. I bought a set of tubes from z1 Parts, $155 after the trip. Put my forks together Sunday. Good thing I checked if the Oil Lock Piece (that gold colored part in the bottom of the tube) is bigger that the seal. Dropped those in before I put the seal in. They went together pretty easy.
 
Picked up some Bling from the dealer today.

Hard to believe some of these parts are still available. Points cover $39, cheaper than the reproduction ones. Plus got all the bearing retainers for the hubs.
 
I've been combing eBay for the supplies to recover my seat. The pan was in pretty bad shape, rust removal and paint/powder coat. The foam was a bit rotted, cover dry rotted and ripped, strap buckles rusted, chrome trim beat up... In other words, a lot of work and $. Then I saw these cheap after market seats pop up on eBay for ~$150 plus shipping, so I decided what the hell, I have close to that in restoring the one I have. Got it in the mail and took some picks of it on the bike.

I'm generally pleased. The Pan is metal, the doc holder is held on with screws rather than plastic rivets like the stock seat, piping is a little shinier, the trim strip is a little different, and it's missing a couple of the rubber cushions. So to the restorer perfectionist, it's not quite right. This bike is not going to be 100% original anyways, so it's a nice seat for this build.
 
Got some time in the workshop last weekend and did some front end work.
After searching high and low for a decent set of K3-K5 fork ears I found a set on Ebay. I de-rusted them, filled the small rust hole with JB Weld, painted the raw metal with silver paint and polished the chrome. Not perfect, but they turned out pretty good. Got the new fork gators on and put them on the bike.

Some how I lost those D washers that go in the tree top clamps around the legs. Found that they are about 2.25 mm thick, so I made some from some from some washers. I found a couple that were the right size and thickness and used the bench grinder to flatten one side.

Then I worked on the front brake. The caliper I had was in rough shape, so I ending up buying one from someone on another forum. They got powder coated, and I cleaned the insides real good and put in a new seal. I also polished off the bracket and mounted her up.

After doing this I noticed the brake line is in front, and the bleeder is in back. This caliper must be for the other side or something. Oh well, I'm leaving it for now, hoping the only difference is line and bleeder holes are switched.
