Please help identify this piece - oil leak.

This little nubbin' on the top of the valve cover (in the center of the photo), the thing that looks like a convex nickel, is leaking oil.

I've consulted the service manual, but I can't find any mention of what this thing is.

Yep, that cap should just pop off and there's a oil seal underneath, but there's a hole through it for the tach cable itself. But if you don't plan to run a tach then some heat-applicable silicone stuff around the plug should seal it up. Just don't make it too permanent in case you ever want to get tht plug out.
 
That looks like an aftermarket tach cable plug. couple of companies make them. The plugs normally use just an oring. Take that screw out and the plug should come out. Do not use silicone on any part of the 750 motor. The silicone will soften and fall off. Many camshafts and top ends have been ruined by the oil orfices in the head being blocked by silicone pieces. Take the plug off and get the right oring and you will be leak free again!
