DouginIa,
1. Do not try to start until you have drained and removed / cleaned the carb bowls to prevent the gunk from being sucked into the smaller passages of the carb.
2. Remove and clean the gas tank.
3. Replace the gas lines and filter, if it has one.
4. Replace the air filter.
5. Drain the oil and refill with 10W40 Valvoline motorcycle oil and new oil filter.
6. Do #5 again in about 100 miles.
7. Replace the battery.
8. Replace the tires. Tires have a 6 year life span.
9. Should have mentioned this before #5, above: When you drain the oil, pull the clutch lever in and secure with a tie wrap. Leave it that way overnight to let all the oil on the clutch plates drain and for the plates to separate.
10. I would replace the drive chain because it may have rust under the plates and in the pins that cannot be seen.
11. Squirt some Marvel Mystery oil into the cylinders before the first start.
12. Remove the valve adjustment plugs and squirt a lot of oil in there. Try to get the oil on the cam shaft lobes.
