Let me be more specific. I have two engines. The above 3 punctures are of a k3 the following will be of the k4. One side looks scorched

Yeah, I was wondering if that was your point. Best to remove the cam bearing caps and rockers to inspect the cam on that side. Looks like a lot of silicone was used on that head gasket. Problem with that is the excess silicone often finds its way to the oil orifices in the head, under the cam towers next to the cam chain tunnel. These orifices are quite small and easily plugged (especially by globs of silicone) that often leads to a roached cam, rockers, and cam tower(s).

Deeper inspection required.

Of course, it might be nothing at all. There looks to be oil on both sides of the head on the first engine. The second one looks pretty clean, but does that mean oil starved?

I would at least remove the cam bearing caps on both and inspect the cam journals and cam bearings.

The gobs of silicone are definitely a red flag on the first engine. I'll bet you'll find similar gobs of engine killing silicone all over other gaskets in that engine.

Welcome aboard! These are pretty simple machines, but there's a lot of little simple things that are easily overlooked as well.
