For sure nothing earlier than '84 as a start......................past that depends on your personal desire for self-torture..........'can be put' covers a LOT of territory.

I was just wondering what would fit the mounts . I'm looking for a motor for an 84 frame. Does it have to be 84 or would an 85 or 86 fit as well?

Thinking '84-'86 is the same and US spec ones are actually CB700s as that was the time period that Harley-Davidson got the feds to outlaw all Japanese 'dumping' of 750 and larger motorcycles. Honda responded by making them 700 cc. instead to get around the whopping tariff there.
